AAUP-UC Supports Long Island University Brooklyn Faculty During Lockout

Long Island University Brooklyn recently locked out the faculty in the middle of contract negotiations. This union busting attempt to starve the LIU Brooklyn faculty into submission is deplorable and the labor movement stands in full solidarity with the Long Island University Faculty Federation (LIUFF).

The AAUP-UC has sent a letter to LIU Brooklyn’s president urging the administration to end the lockout and engage in good faith bargaining immediately.

We’ve also been in touch with the LIUFF. The faculty are holding strong and have no intention of submitting to the administration’s disgraceful tactics.

If you want to support the faculty at LIU Brooklyn, you can take a moment and fill out the petition located here.

You can also follow what is happening with the lockout at the LIUFF website and the LIUFF Twitter account @LIU_FF.

Several stories have also been written about the lockout including Lockout Lessons and Locked Out On Labor Day.

At a time when academic freedom and integrity is under assault at institutions of higher learning across the country, it’s important that we stand united with the members of the LIUFF as they fight for a fair and equitable contract.

Governing Board Approves Proposed Collective Bargaining Agreement

On Friday, August 26, 2016, the AAUP-UC Governing Board unanimously agreed to approve the new proposed Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the AAUP-UC and Utica College.

This tentative approval is now subject to a ratification vote from the AAUP-UC dues paying membership.

The procedure for the AAUP-UC ratification is as follows:

1) The new contract will be typed up with all of the tentative agreements inserted into the contract. All contract language/changes will be verified by both the AAUP-UC and Utica College. This process will take several weeks.

2) Once Step #1 is completed, the Governing Board will call an AAUP-UC membership information meeting.

3) At least one week prior to this information meeting, the Governing Board will send the tentatively approved contract to the AAUP-UC membership. The new contract, as well as a copy of the old contract, will be distributed electronically.

4) One week after the informational meeting, secret ballots will be mailed to the active membership for the ratification vote. This ballot may be electronic.

As always, if you have questions about the contract or any workplace issue, please don’t hesitate to contact AAUP-UC President, Paul J. MacArthur or any other member of the Governing Board.

Thank you for your continued support of the AAUP-UC.

Tentative Agreement Reached

On Thursday, August 18, 2016, after 16 months of bargaining, the negotiating teams of the AAUP-UC and Utica College administration reached a tentative agreement for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement.

This tentative agreement will now be brought to the AAUP-UC Governing Board for approval. If the AAUP-UC Governing Board approves the agreement, it will be brought forward to the AAUP-UC dues paying membership for a ratification vote. An informational meeting will be held before any membership vote and a copy of the new contract will be distributed to the membership before this informational meeting. The timeline for ratification will be presented as soon as it is available.

Additionally, the Utica College administration will need to have the contract ratified by the Utica College Board of Trustees.

To allow for this process to be completed, the current CBA has been extended until October 24, 2016.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns about negotiations, or any workplace issue, please don’t hesitate to contact the AAUP-UC President, Paul J. MacArthur or any other member of the Governing Board.

Thank you for your continued support of the AAUP-UC!

Nominate a Student For an AAUP-UC Scholarship!

Each year, the AAUP-UC awards two $1,000 scholarships at our spring luncheon.

Members of the bargaining unit are invited to nominate worthy Utica College students in their next-to-last year at Utica College. This includes juniors or students who are continuing in(to) a graduate program at Utica College.

The Virgil C. Crisafulli Scholarship is awarded each year to a junior for demonstrated outstanding leadership in regard to at least one of AAUP’s core values such as academic freedom, professional responsibility, civic service, humanitarian concern for others, and solidarity with those who share the common goals of equity and voice for all.

The Robert W. Millett Scholarship is awarded for academic excellence reflecting the values of the AAUP: respect for open dialogue and the free exchange of ideas; the right to self-expression; integrity in scholarly endeavors; and support for academic freedom.

While any nominee should have both an outstanding academic record and an interest in service to the community, the emphasis for each award is different. The Millett scholarship highlights academics and the Crisafulli scholarship highlights service. A subcommittee of the governing board reviews the nominations and determines the winners of the scholarships.

To nominate a student, email the nominee’s name and a letter of recommendation to either of the scholarship subcommittee members: Denise Nepveux or Leonore Fleming.

Please be sure to specify which scholarship you are nominating your student for, and submit your nominations by Thursday, April 21.

See last year’s winners here.

AAUP-UC Letter to The College of Saint Rose

The AAUP-UC Governing Board sent a letter to President Stefanco and Chairwoman Calogero of The College of Saint Rose, expressing extreme disappointment in the administration’s recent decision to discontinue 28 programs and fire 23 tenured and tenure-track faculty members.

The New York State Conference of the AAUP sent an open letter to The College of Saint Rose condemning their actions, and on January 13, the AAUP announced that it will send a committee to The College of Saint Rose to investigate the situation.
